Most people know, or at least understand, quite a lot about trading on stock exchanges: where one “buys low and sells high”. In simple terms, a successful trade on an internet betting exchange is one where an outcome is ‘back’ed at a higher price than it is ‘lay’ed. For example, in the Newmarket 14:00 Win Market, I lay Horse A at 2.0 (even money) for £10, and I back Horse A at 3.0 (2-1 in old fashioned odds) for £5.50. If Horse A wins, I would make £1, if it loses I make £4.50 (the £10 “lay” bet minus the £5.50 losing “back” bet). Either way, I make a guaranteed profit.

Why Would I need an Automated Betting Bot to Trade on Betfair?

The example above is fairly, if not very uncommon! A horse which trades at evens does not often hit the price of 2-1, at least not before the ‘off’. However, if we shorten the margin between ‘back’ and ‘lay’ we are much more likely to see both bets matched. When we do so, though, the profit made from this trade also decreases to pennies and, in order to keep risk as low as possible, it is prudent that each trade is for a risk of no more than £5 or £10 in case a trade is left “open” and we cannot get the other side of the bet placed.

You can see, then, that in order to make a good profit from any event, when trading on Betfair, we need to make a great many successful trades in order to make a good profit. Doing this by hand is not only difficult, it is also extremely monotonous!
