What a great and amazing race the 1990 Cheltenham Gold Cup was! Everyone was willing Dessie (Desert Orchid) to win after he showed such heart and class the previous year when battling back to win the 1989 Gold Cup (view 1989 Gold Cup here) yet Nortons Coin, under Graham McCourt, had the 90 Gold Cup won at the top of the hill.

Incredible.

Even more incredible was the SP of 100-1! That is some odds. Pretty much everyone you ask about this race will claim to have had 50p on it – don’t believe them – the whole world was on Desert Orchid, and don’t let them forget it! No-one backed this, that’s why it was 200-1 with Laddies in the morning.
