Enjoy this replay of Saturday’s 2009 Coral Eclipse from Sandown, in which the ‘09 Epsom Derby winner, Sea The Stars once again showed his incredible class for trainer John Oxx, storming home strongly from Aiden O’Brien’s Rip Van Winkle.
The horse won by an official length, though the 14 strong field were in truth never likely to beat this powerful animal.
When Rip Van Winkle came with his challenge on the furlong pole, backers of the 4/7 favourite may have had a heart fluttering moment, however, when Mick Kinane, aboard Sea The Stars asked the horse for more effort, he verily powered away, and was easing when the line came, showing tremendous acceleration. 1m2f would appear to be the horse’s ideal trip, as he looked to be just on the limit of his stamina in the Derby (admittedly having obliterated a very strong field!).
