Football Tips – Premier League 27 September 2008

After some huge, and very close, fixtures in the past weeks of the Barclays Premier League, this weekend sees the big four play out what many would expect to be easier games. We’re going to run through some of the fixtures, and provide some tips for those of you who like to place singles, doubles, trebles and accumulators on the English Premier League football.

Everton v Liverpool KO 12:45 (Sky Sports 1)

This year’s Merseyside derby comes at a time when Everton are struggling at home, and a few voices are beginning to question whether David Moyes has achieved all he can for the Blue side of the city.

In the past few years, Everton have enjoyed some good success in this fixture, but this summer, Liverpool have strengthened their squad, and they’ve started the season brightly: winning games that they could well have lost (e.g. Middlesbrough) in the past.

Steven Gerrard and Fernando Torres have continued their sparkling form this term and, in Reina, Liverpool have one of the most assured, match-winning goalkeepers in the league.

We expect Liverpool to make life difficult for Everton and should win this match by a couple of goals, 2-0. Expect goals from Torres and Gerrard to get on the scoresheet after their rest against Crewe.

Advised:

  • Lay Everton on Betfair (currently 4.2) for 1 point
  • Back Liverpool to win 2-0 (15-2 William Hill)

Stoke v Chelsea KO 3pm

Newly promoted Stoke have it all to do against the financial giants at Chelsea today. Stoke will do well to repeat last weeks colossal effort to keep Liverpool out (in a match where Liverpool appeared to have done enough by scoring a legitimate goal which was disallowed), and an early goal from Chelsea may well see the floodgates come open slightly. Expect Chelsea, who are more entertaining and positive under their new management, to win by 2+ goals.

Advised:

  • Over 2.5 goals (1.9 on Betfair)
  • Chelsea -1 Goal (evens with Paddy Power)

Aston Villa v Sunderland KO 3pm

Villa have been doing quite well thank you this year, while Sunderland have been in and out a little this term despite strengthening across the board this summer. However, the 1.65 odds on Aston Villa seem a little short against a side which has begun to look like a cohesive unit under Roy Keane.

Advised:

  • Lay Aston Villa 1 point @ 1.65 on Betfair
  • Back the draw @ 13-5 with Ladbrokes

Manchester United v Bolton KO 3pm

United are super short at around 1-5 to beat Bolton at Old Trafford today, and who can argue with that price given the weapons Ferguson has in his locker. Bolton tried their damnedest against Arsenal last week and came up short. Expect similar today.

Advised:

  • Manchester United to win @ 2-9 with Ladbrokes

Arsenal v Hull KO 5:30pm (Setanta)

Hull have been raising many an eyebrow this season, pulling off some shock defeats at much more respected clubs, notably when beating Newcastle a couple of weeks ago. Newcastle, however, are a club in turmoil, whereas Arsenal at the Emirates Stadium are a different prospect altogether. Expect a hard fought battle, with some slick Arsenal moves resulting in well worked goals. Hull will try to frustrate where possible, but are likely to slip to a defeat by a couple of goals.

Advised:

  • Arsenal to win @ 2-9 with Totesport
  • Number of goals 2-3 @ Evens with Totesport
