Grand Nationals Remembered – Kilmore and Fred Winter Win in 1962

Fred Winter was one of the most successful jockeys in National Hunt history – and whenever I talk to those who witnessed him, they all agree he was one of the finest of his era. Champion Jockey four times (and Champion Trainer a remarkable 8 times) Fred Winter won his one and only Grand National aboard Kilmore in this race of 1962.

Kilmore was returned at 28/1 – and if any of you can (honestly) say you backed this, we’d be very surprised!

While the Pathe news report really shows its age, its still fun to watch these old races back again!

  1. Re your clip of Kilmore winning the 1962 Grand National -
I didn’t back the horse, but I can honestly say that my late father did, he had a fiver on each way, very nice result for an occasional punter. And what did he do with the winnings ? He went out and bought an Omega Constellation watch, which I inherited and is on my wrist as I type this note.
