I can honestly tell you I backed Kilmore in ’62. I was aged 16 with a Saturday job in a local shop. Other staff said “pick a horse we have a shilling each way on the national” I remembered Kilmore from Sportsview on BBC so I handed over my two bob. The rest, as they say, is history.

Surely Kilmore was not Fred Winter’s only Grand NationAL victory
He won on Sundew in 1957

I was 12 at the time and was allowed into the bookies to place bets for my dad. I began to get interested in horse racing, and in particular, Fred Winter. I followed his career with relish, and in 1962 tipped Kilmore to everyone I knew. what a great result. The gaming laws changed not long after barring me from the bookies. I gave up gambling completely, and just have a bet on the Grand National. I backed the winner 3 years ago with a £20 win. It came in at 33-1 and I trousered £660.00

Re your clip of Kilmore winning the 1962 Grand National -
I didn’t back the horse, but I can honestly say that my late father did, he had a fiver on each way, very nice result for an occasional punter. And what did he do with the winnings ? He went out and bought an Omega Constellation watch, which I inherited and is on my wrist as I type this note.
