Autobetting - Betting Bots - Do you use them? Do they work?
Over the coming days and weeks, we’re going to be running a feature on autobetting - the use of ‘betting bots’ - to place automated, pre-defined bets on betting exchanges such as Betfair. In this introductory article, we ask for your thoughts to help us with our exploration of the subject. That feature will become our regular “Betting Bots Exposed” section.
Betting bots have long been around on Betfair betting exchange. You might recognise them from such capers as the immediate lay at 1.01 bets which fire in as soon as a market opens or turns ‘in-play’. Or perhaps you’ve witnessed other betting which takes place far too quickly to be human. For every thing you’ve seen on a betting exchange that has made you say ‘hang on, who could possibly keep doing THAT???’ there’s every chance that you were witnessing something different. A robot. A betting bot.
So what are these “betting bots”? Who makes them? And, importantly, how profitable can they be?
This is what we’re going to be asking over the coming weeks in our new feature - Betting Bots Exposed.
We hope to show you some of the tactics and techniques that are regularly employed by those who use betting bots; the software they use; how they made it, or where they bought it from; how much profit they are making; and how easy it is to start with a betting bot of your own. We’re going to be testing out several different bots from the marketplace as well as developing or explaining some of our own software. Lastly, but not least, we hope to show you real examples of how you can beat the bots at their own game!
With this in mind, please feel free to answer any or all of the following questions in the comments box at the bottom of this page:
- Do you use betting bots (automated bet placement software of any sort)?
- If so, how profitable are they? In ball park or percentage terms, how much do you win or lose per day, week, month?
- In which markets do you use betting bots?
- What type of strategy do you use?
- Where did you get the software / script - did you a) buy it as a piece of software, b) write it yourself, or c) pay someone else to write it, or something else?
- What tip would you give anyone thinking of writing or purchasing automated betting software?
We’ll be answering these questions ourselves soon, but it is always good to see what opinions come out from everyone else. Of course, if you have a functioning, lucrative betting bot running, then it is likely that you’ll also want to keep it fairly quiet, or you may see your ‘edge’ disappear fast - feel free to generalise heavily, we always do.

Your new feature sounds great - I’ve subscribed to your blog for updates.
I’ve used betting bots for years now and I wouldn’t be without them now. I use Bet Angel for trading, the Grey Horse Bot for running automated systems and I’ve also had a custom bot developed for using with the trading application from Gruss Software.
I’ve got to say that my absolute favourite is the Grey Horse Bot, because (a) it’s completely reliable, (b) it’s packed with features and (c) the developers are happy to share strategies you can use with it too.
I’d also be interested to hear other’s views.

Thanks for that Paul - we’ve used bet angel, and have developed our own tools - we will have to have a look at the other bot you mention in more detail.
The first feature piece should be online on Monday or Tuesday.
I have just purchased Greyhorse bot and am still getting to grips with it before I put it to good use.I will let yuou know how I get on with it but would like to hear some feedback from other users,so I am looking forward to your feature. I will be trying it on the Greyhound markets as there are more races to cover and originally the bot was developed for that but now covers horses and football.
I have recently used the grey horse bot, but i found the software to be buggy and it crashed quite a few times. I am also a user of gruss and have been for quite a few years from when it was freeware and i have to say that it is a excellent piece of software and very reliable and if you know how to write some easy code in excel it is not hard to write your own bots.
