Betting In-Running

As we use Betfair betting exchange for all of our betting each day, a lot of people ask if we bet “in-running” - betting once the race is ‘off’ - when the horses have started to run.

Generally speaking we do not.

However, there are two ways in which betting in running can be used successfully:

  1. To “green up” markets - when you lay a horse in running that you backed before the race only at a shorter price. Done successfully, this can guarantee a profit despite the result. A good tactic for horses which travel well, but about which you have stamina concerns. The reverse can also be done (backing a horse you layed pre start).
  2. To get a better price.

We have used in running betting to green up markets, and tested the system using just that strategy. We would argue that it is a good way to secure profits and minimise risk, however it does not work for us: using green up strategies with our selections, we reduced profits.

However, we have used in running betting to obtain a better price. One example which springs immediately to mind was at Kelso this month - we backed a horse to win which travels poorly in its races. The jockey was really rousting the horse to keep it interested. We had strong confidence in its ability to win. The price drifted on Betfair, and we quickly placed a bet when it reached 20.0 (which was matched at over 30.0). There were bets matched at over 90.0. The horse won comfortably after the rider got it settled.

This horse had reached 90.0 with over a circuit remaining.

We had already matched our ordinary stake before the off, and betting in this irregular manner is highly inadvisable as a long term strategy, however, we are certain that there is money to be made playing in-running in this fashion, though normally horses we back tend to shorten in running.

We may well build in-running lay-offs and backing triggers into our systems in future, though, as any ‘edge’ (which we do have) can also be exploited after the off.

For in-running betting, you could also try ExtraBet (see below banner).
