Following our great success in this year’s Grand National, and the Scottish National (where we tipped the winner at 66-1!), we’re going to try to master yet another of the Great British races of 2008. This time its Derby day as the Epsom Derby is off tomorrow (Saturday 7th June 2008) at 4pm.

For this race, we’ll keep it short and sweet - in any Derby, you’re looking to find the winner, and maybe a live outsider. We hope we’ve discovered both for you amongst our three selections.

All three of these horses should be backed each-way (or win and place) on Betfair betting exchange. Those of you who are new to online gambling should check out our Derby Day Free Bets post (click the link to view) which will get you free bets from Betfair, Totesport and many more, just for signing up and placing a bet!

Here are our three selections, in order of our past-performance based ratings:

  • Casual Conquest
  • Frozen Fire
  • Rio De La Plata

Get your bets on Rio De La Plata on early as Frankie Dettori’s mount is sure to take a lot of following from the plucky pound punters. However, this horse has not raced over anything like as far as the Derby mile and a half, so we have to take stamina slightly on trust, and the pace of the race may well dictate how well this horse performs.

Casual Conquest is expected to go off favourite, and is currently trading at around 5.5 on Betfair. We put Casual Conquest right up there based on his two runs which were excellent times (consistently better than anything the rest of this Derby field have produced).

Frozen Fire is a horse we really like. Its from an excellent yard (Aiden O’Brien / Tabor) and is ridden by the old master Mick Kinane - a big race legend. This horse’s debut was breathtaking (over 7f) and his last run over 1m2f at York suggests he can do well over the Epsom Derby distance. Trading at around 20-1, this is a solid each-way selection.

Be sure to get some free Derby day bets. Also consider a combination Exacta on the three horses with Totesport - to a £1 stake this would cost you £6. If 2 of these three horses finish first and second, you’d be looking at a handsome return.

Best of luck!
