Premier League 2009/2010 Big Four Tips – Long Term

Barclays Premier League Trophy

Barclays Premier League Trophy

This weekend sees the wait for another Premier League season over after a summer of monster ins and outs at the top football clubs in the land.

Here, I’ll preview the Big Four ahead of Barclays Premier League 09/10 season, as well as providing a couple of long-term tips for those of you who like betting on the outcome of a season before a ball is kicked.

I shall be running through the teams in the order they finished last year.

Barclays Premier League 2009/10 Top Four Preview

Manchester United

Alex Fergusen retained his Premier League crown last year with his great squad of players. Built upon a solid defence, which conceeded hardly any goals in a great spell after Christmas during which, in particular, Vidic was a immense player at the heart of the United defence. United were also assisted by another huge bagful of goals from the finally departed Cristiano Ronaldo. While £80million is a nice nest egg, it will not ensure goals, particularly when Tevez has also exited the revolving doors, only to be replaced by injury prone Michael Owen. If Berbatov does not pull his finger out and hit the net 20+ times this season, United will struggle to retain their title this time around. He is not likely to do so. While United are a shoe-in to finish in the top 4, they look likely to be pipped by one of their near rivals based on their lack of adequate replacement for the quality they lost this summer. Not a safe lay for the league, by anyone’s standards, however, United can string together good runs when required, and that, sometimes, is enough to win over 38 games.

Liverpool

Liverpool achieved a credit-worthy second place in the Premier League last season, and will look to build on that performance again this term. That said, their team had a heavy reliance on Steven Gerrard, Fernando Torres and Xabi Alonso. The latter went to Real Madrid last week, while the former two players both tend to miss more than their share of games due to injury. Liverpool look like a side who needs luck with injuries as they don’t possess quite the depth of Manchester United or Chelsea. That said, on their day, with a starting eleven of choice, Liverpool can worry any side in this league. Top 4 once more, but probably not enough in the locker to win this league.

Chelsea

Had Chelsea not been without Drogba at the start of last season, they’d have run United much closer. Without having purchased too much quality up top this summer either, they look to be in the same boat: possessing riches in abundance in midfield, but without top-class backup up front and in the heart of defence. Key injuries could harm their effort again. That said, their starting eleven would win this league in our opinion. It all boils down to whether or not Chelsea can keep their front line of attack fit and playing, or add one top class striker to their ranks during a transfer window. If they can; or if they do, they look like the most likely winners of the Barclays Premier League 09/10.

Arsenal

The Arsenal faithful had a bit of a scare last season as they looked like having their worst season of the Wenger era for a short while, before Aston Villa fell away and the introduction of Arshavin galvanised the team. Adebayor’s exit will likely do the team’s morale a lot of good too, as the player looked to be carrying a mighty ego around the Emirates Stadium. This season Arsenal’s youth policy may just pay off, as the players have another year’s worth of experience under their belts, and a huge amount of skill to boot. If Arsenal could start scoring to match the amount of possession they enjoy, they would have the complete package. However, they have lost, rather than gained, in defence this summer, and look vulnerable once more to, at least, the three sides who finished above them last season, if not a few of those below who can plan a set-piece or two. At best, Arsenal should finish third this season, unless they get 25+ goals from Arshavin. The Russian looks like he just might be able to do that, so be careful discounting this Arsenal set-up.

Advised: Back Arsenal to finish Top 3 @ 2.44 with Betfair

Premier League 2009/10 – Big Four Best Bet

With all of the ins and outs, the best bet we can advise has to be the lay of Liverpool: it won’t be this year they lift the Premier League. Take 5.0 on Betfair and perhaps look to trade out at Christmas before the transfer window opens once more, given a longer price.
