Premier League Football Tips – Saturday 18 April 2009
This weekend is perhaps the most exciting to date in the 2008/09 Barclays Premier League season as every match taking place is almost certain to contribute heavily towards who goes up or down come the season’s close.
We also have two massive FA Cup ties this weekend too.
In this page, we’ll once again try to profit from the day’s Premier League action.
Aston Villa v West Ham, 15:00
The first match alphabetically and, owing to the top club’s engagements in the FA Cup weekend, the top-of-the bill in terms of league placement sees this interesting match up between the in form West Ham side and the early pace-setters Aston Villa.
Villa’s fantastic start to the season seems a distant memory now as they look increasingly unlikely to match Arsenal’s class and mount a serious challenge for that UEFA Champion’s League fourth spot.
West Ham are looking to sneak into a UEFA Cup (or, to use its proper title for next year, a Europa League) place, while Villa must now turn their focus to keeping 5th place. With Everton out of action this week, both teams will be trying hard to claim at least a point.
The form book gives this match to West Ham, however, Villa must bounce back: their team is too good to go down at home; their manager too savvy. The most likely result? A score draw. The advised bet? Avoid this one – it really could go either way.
Middlesbrough v Fulham, 15:00
Another interesting match which sees struggling Boro looking to continue last week’s improved result against this Fulham side who’ve been beating far better teams at home and away. Fulham will crash Boro’s party – home advantage isn’t that advantageous when your fans don’t turn up and your ground is like a library come the kick-off.
Advised: Lay Middlesbrough @ 2.32 on Betfair
Portsmouth v Bolton, 15:00
This is 14 v 12 in the league and these two sides could be level on points if Portsmouth win this one. Bolton will have something to say about that, though, and, if Portsmouth defend quite so sporadically as they have been, Bolton will profit from their direct approach.
We should see some goals here as Portsmouth are dangerous going forwards, however, they are not the most defensively minded. The same is true of Bolton. It would be slightly surprising if Bolton didn’t take at least a point back with them up North, though.
Advised: Lay Portsmouth @ 2.18 on Betfair
Stoke v Blackburn, 15:00
A Northern Derby, of sorts, which may well be considered a relegation six-pointer. Blackburn come in with their humbling result at the hands of Liverpool last week firmly in their minds. Stoke at home are really becoming something of a danger team for anyone – they have real momentum. Expect another hard-fought home win.
Advised: Back Stoke to win @ 7/5 with Bet365, Expekt or Paddy Power
Sunderland v Hull, 15:00
This is another relegation match, though both sides may yet benefit from fellow northernets, Newcastle and Middlesbrough being even more bereft of form come the season’s end. In any case, Hull have been dreadful since Christmas; Sunderland have been showing signs of life, last weekend they took the lead against the Champions elect in a massively noisy Stadium of Light.
Sunderland should win today. Both sides should stay in the league.
Advised: Back Sunderland to win @ 10/11 with Sky Bet
