Premier League Football Tips – Saturday 21 March 2009

premier-league

Another Saturday sees another set of Barclays Premier League matches take place – this week we have several good betting opportunities too. We’ll get straight in to the match previews and tips.

Portsmouth v Everton 12:45pm

On paper, this should be a close tie, as the two sides are closely matched. The form-book, however, says otherwise as Portsmouth have been struggling since the departure of Harry Redknapp to maintain any sort of sustained run. In fact, wins have been hard to come by, and they’ve already seen off one manager looking for the points which would see them move away from the current precarious position in which the find themselves: separated from the relegation zone only by goal difference. Portsmouth look too good to go down, but they are bereft of form. Everton, however, have turned their season around and yet again are looking to grab a top 6 finish.

Expect Portsmouth to squander what limited opportunities they do get, while Everton prove the more clinical in front of goal, taking this by the odd goal.

Advised: Lay Portsmouth @ 2.98 on Betfair

Blackburn v West Ham 3pm

This is a remarkably similar tale to the match above, save one key element: Sam Allerdyce. Since the arrival of ‘Big Sam’ Blackburn have started to perform better. West Ham are also experiencing great form since an early wobble saw us predict Zola’s departure when he first took the reins. This match is tremendously difficult to call, though, as both sides have the potential for greatness, yet have put in dreadful performances sporadically all season. Consistency is key, and neither side has any.

Fulham v Man United 3pm

Despite what Alex Fergusen claims, his side should have been able to play a couple of matches in a few day last week. Their capitulation against Liverpool had more to do with several key mistakes than any sort of tiredness, and also, as Liverpool are proving this season, for some reason they can pull it together for big games, yet fail to lift themselves for those which they need to win to lift the title.

Man United will win the Premier League this season because they win games like this one at Fulham. They won this fixture in the cup a couple of weeks ago by four goals, and will be looking to perform at a similar level to restore confidence going into the final 8 games of the league with all still to play for. Liverpool are at home against Villa tomorrow, so United know three points today may well see them extend the lead again.

Expect a big performance from Ronaldo, who was criticised last week: he may well get on the score-sheet.

Stoke v Middlesbrough 3pm

This is another relegation battle – aren’t we getting a lot of those this season! This match sees 18th (Stoke) play 19th (Middlesbrough) at home. We haven’t tipped in a Boro match all season, due to their completely in and out form, and we’re not about to start now against a Stoke side who’ve been very tight in many matches, but shipped goals when those defences are breached early in games. Stoke tend to set their stall out, and this game will hinge on whether or not Boro can break them down in the first half hour or so – or whether they try to. If Boro take an early lead, I’d be tempted to Lay a Stoke victory in-running, otherwise, all three results are potentially likely.

Advised: No Bet

Tottenham v Chelsea 3pm

Spurs are another side who seem to thrive on the more difficult matches in the league. They are also a side who need a result to keep their heads above water this weekend, with several of their fellow relegation strugglers playing each other (so any wins from them would see Spurs back within three or so points of the drop zone). Generally speaking, in football leagues, must-win, more often than not, means can’t win. However, Chelsea have not given up their title dreams yet – indeed they are best positioned to win the league should United slip – so they must be considered a side looking for three points too. Chelsea’s class should tell, as it did last weekend against Manchester City. Spurs won’t make life easy for them, but Chelsea should take this by one goal, winning 0-1 or 1-2.

West Brom v Bolton 3pm

Two months ago, we would have questioned whether Bolton could win this match. Now, we’re reasonably sure they will. West Brom are the poorest side in the league by some margin and the only that we can predict definitely will remain in the bottom three until the season’s end. A Bolton victory looks to be the bet of the day at around 2/1.

Advised: Back Bolton to win @ 7/5 with Totesport

Newcastle v Arsenal 5:45pm

Since the arrival of Arshavin, Arsenal look once more like the unit they were. They have a real talent now at the head of the pack: the man can score and, importantly, his wide play is excellent, giving great link-up opportunities. Walcott is back and providing support on the right flank too. Arsenal have fourth spot locked in their sights once again as Villa are starting to wobble: they have the class to bring home a result from this long trip to Newcastle, who, despite looking better in spells since their dreadful start to the season, can really only hope to curtail Arsenal’s scoring by breaking their possession advantage – which will be IRO 60:40. If Arsenal can continue to find the net, they should have no problem winning today.

Advised: Back Arsenal to win @ 8/11 with Sky Bet
