Punter Takes £1Million From William Hills Accumulator!
A North Yorkshire based betting shop 50p punter has been dubbed the first “betting shop millionaire” after scooping over £1 million in an eight horse accumulator placed at the William Hills office in Thirsk yesterday.
The man, who remains unidentified, placed the bet on Friday 22 February, one of several 50 pence accumulators he had yesterday – as he did regularly – and only discovered his incredible success when he wandered into the Bedale Hills office this morning to place a further 5 50p bets, Graham Sharpe of Hills tells:
He placed five more 50p bets for Saturday’s racing, then asked staff to check his betting slip from the day before.
When they told him he had £1m to come but would have to collect it from the Thirsk shop, he went visibly pale before saying that he would have to go and tell his wife.
It is a staggering bet, and earns him a place in history as the world’s first betting shop millionaire.
The combined odds of this lucky punter’s eight horse accumulator were in excess of 2 million to one.
At Systemlays UK we love to see a bookmaker take a hit from regular punters – especially if the horses he selects have names like “Isn’t That Lucky” and “A Dream Come True”.
More importantly, though, we’d like to know if he still places 50p bets now he’s a millionaire?

A truly momentous occasion. There must have been some flat caps spinning.
Wow! I won £6,000 from a 50p bet before, and still dine out on the story long after I spent the money. He must have had a real shock if he just asked them to check his ticket!
