Advanced Betting Guide – Spread Betting

In essence a spread is a handicap on the favourite. The objective of the spread betting firms is to attract equal business on either side of the spread. In that case the operators are not concerned about the outcome of the event as they make their profits by earning commission. A typical spread is 2.4-2.6 for the number of goals in a soccer match. Bettors buy (go high) if they think there will be more than 2.6 goals. Bettors sell (go low) if they think there will be less than 2.4 goals. The more the customer is right the greater the winnings. Conversely, the more the customer is wrong the greater the losses.

English Premier League

One of the most poplar soccer spread bets concerns the number of points each team will win over the course of the English Premier League season. When the market was first issued Manchester City were predicted to win the most points of the 20 teams. However, after five games Manchester United were assessed to be the side that would accumulate most points.

Newcastle’s current quote is 52.5 to 54 points and that looks like a buying opportunity. In this instance the implied prediction is that Newcastle will end the season with more than 54 points. Last season Newcastle finished fifth in the league with 62 points. There is no reason why they will not be able to match or improve on that record this time.

There may have been an overreaction to Liverpool’s poor start to the season. Granted they have picked up just two points from

Value in buying Liverpool at 57

~Sports Betting Analyst

their first five matches. However, they were clearly the better team in four of those matches and it won’t take long before they put together a winning sequence. That means there could be some value in buying their Premier League points at 57.

Busby Babes, Fergies Fledglings – Rodgers Runts?

On the other side of the market Chelsea’s buy price looks high and on the basis of last season and this looks like a sell. It was a successful season in Europe but in the league they picked up just 61 points. Granted, they have made a good start to the season and that may account for the inflated spread. However, they have not improved so much relative to other sides to suggest a haul of over 77 points is correct.

Advanced Betting Guide – Exchange Betting

Betfair dominates the global exchange betting market and their share is over 90%. Exchanges work on the basis of backers and layers having conflicted views. Betfair and other exchange operators broker these deals and take a commission on winning bets. This is also known as peer-to-peer betting as the bookmaker lets the customers set the prices and they do not have an interest in the outcome of an event.

World Twenty20

At the time of writing the competition has reached the Super Eights stage. Despite a number of upsets in the preliminary round all eight seeds progressed so the group matches ultimately ran to form. South Africa are the new favourites and they look a decent team to back on Betfair at 5.8. The team to lay would be England but at 18.5 there is plenty of downside with this trade.

Before the tournament began South Africa were first in the world Twenty20 rankings. They have won both their preliminary matches without needing to accumulate massive totals. Hashim Amla has yet to make a significant contribution with the bat and for that reason he can be backed at 16.5 to be tournament top runscorer. If South Africa progress to the final he will play in five more matches in which case a big score is anticipated.

England are the defending champions but have been dismissed as potential winners this time by the exchange bookmakers. They lost to India by 90 runs in the group stage and only qualified for the Super Eights by beating Afghanistan. This looks like a laying opportunity but stakes should be kept to a minimum to limit potential losses at such a big price.

Advanced Betting Guide – Traditional Betting

Before the onset of the internet the only way you could place a bet in the United Kingdom was by paying by cash in a betting office or using a telephone debit or credit account. Bettors can still gamble using the traditional method and even now more money is bet in this way than online. Winnings are determined by the stake and odds and losses are limited by the stake. Odds are expressed in fractions rather than decimals.

FA Cup

Everton are a best priced 16/1 to win the English FA Cup and that looks a price worth taking in view of the leading contenders’ commitments in the Champions League. Everton have already been eliminated from the Capital One (League) Cup. On recent form they are unlikely to be challenging for the Premier League title at the end of the year which means the FA Cup will be their only chance to win a trophy.

In David Moyes’ ten year spell as Everton’s manager the club have had little money to spend and they became a selling club. However, it is three years since the last significant departure when Joleon Lescot moved to Manchester City for a huge fee for a defender. Mikel Arteta left for Arsenal in the close season but he is coming towards the end of his career at this level.

The manager has actually been able to spend some money in recent years. Marouane Fellaini and Nikica Jelavic have been shrewd purchases. Fellaini not only scored the winning goal against Manchester United in the first game of the season but he was by some distance the best player on the field.

Everton have a decent FA Cup pedigree having won the competition on five occasions, though the last time was in 1995. They reached the semi-finals last season and took the lead against Liverpool only to lose the match 2-1. A similar effort is expected this time and club could well advance one stage further and reach the final.

Everton – Losing Semi-finalist in 2012

Advanced Betting Guide – Binary Betting

Binary betting is a type of financial betting that has been applied to sports events. It displays the price of a bet in an index of 1 to 100. If an event happens the bet is settled at 100 and if an event does not happen the bet is settled at 0. The greater the likelihood of an event happening the higher the price will be. A bettor can buy or sell or go high or low. If a bettor things something will happen they buy and if a bettor things something will not happen they sell. If there are just two possible outcomes it is a binary bet.

Aviva Premiership

Leicester to finish first in the regular season looks a profitable play

~Sports Betting Analyst

It is possible to buy Leicester Tigers at 32 for this year’s Aviva Premiership in English rugby union. The side finished second in the last regular season to Harlequins and the form was confirmed in the play-off final. However, Leicester suffered most due to absentees at the Rugby World Cup last autumn. In fact they did not win a match at home until just before Christmas.

While Harlequins have not changed their side significantly from last season Leicester have strengthened with nine new arrivals offset by eight departures. That is a significant turnover of players but the impression is that they now have a better squad of players and with that in mind the bet appears to be go high on their binary quote for league performance. A profit will be made if Leicester finish first in the regular season and that looks a bet worth making.

Ante Post Betting Guide – Champions League

Group matches in this season’s Champions League have already begun. The two Spanish giants of Real Madrid and Barcelona head the market and both sides have begun the campaign with wins. The combined odds of the two sides to win the competition are about 5/4 but there could be some interest in Juventus at a much bigger price.

Juventus – Dark Horses?

The Italian side are currently on a 42 match league unbeaten run and they will be looking to replicate

Are Juventus this years dark horses?

~Sports Betting Analyst

that form in the Champions League. Juventus have not been in the competition for two years and they will be keen to make an impact. The betting suggests the final will be a Classico between Barcelona and Real Madrid but at the odds available Juventus look an interesting alternative.

Probably only Barcelona have a better midfield in Europe. Juventus have won of the best central midfield players in the world in Andrea Pirlo. He was the dominant player in several of Italy’s matches in Euro 2012, including the quarter-final win against England. Juventus also have a defence made up predominantly of current Italy internationals and the side look well balanced and equipped to progress to the latter stages of this season’s Champions League.

Of the English sides this could be the year that Arsenal have a good campaign. Arsene Wenger seems to have bought wisely in order to replace Robin Van Persie. Manchester City have been drawn in a tough group and have already had a heartbreaking defeat to Real Madrid. Manchester United started unconvincingly against Galatasaray and surely Chelsea will not enjoy a repeat of last season’s good fortune which saw them win the Champions League for the first time in their history.

Ante Post Betting Guide - Twenty20 World Cup

This year’s t major cricket international tournament is the Twenty20 World Cup. Twelve international

Twenty20 World Cup Final held October 7th

~Sports Betting Analyst

sides are in a competition being played in Sri Lanka. The 10 leading Test nations qualify by right with an additional two sides earning their places through a qualifying tournament. The tournament started on September 18th and the final is played on October 7th.

South Africa are the current leaders in the T20 world rankings. Only teams who played have eight T20 international matches over the last two years will have their rating converted into a ranking. England are currently second in the standings and the tournament hosts, Sri Lanka, are third. India are favourites to win the tournament and they are fifth in the rankings after completing the minimum required number of matches.

World T20 No.1 – South Africa

~Sports Betting Analyst

With several so-called minnows in the tournament there could be some high scores and the record Twebty20 score of 230 could be beaten. That is a tremendous achievement to maintain a rate of 13 runs per over but there could be some weak bowling attacks on show and the record looks vulnerable.

All the matches are being shown live on satellite television so the in-running markets should have plenty of liquidity. However, favourite backers beware as the shortest format of the game often throws up some surprise results. The markets can swing ball by ball after a wicket or boundary and traders will be out in force.

Ante Post Betting Guide - Ryder Cup

Europe are currently trading at 2.5 on Betfair to win the Ryder Cup and in a competition that is traditionally evenly matched that looks like a price worth taking. The United States have home advantage but significantly the European side will only include one debutant.

Some commentators have questioned the thinking of selecting a rookie for a match played away from

Nicolas Colsaerts – Controversial Selection?

~Sports Betting Analyst

home. Nicolas Colsaerts is the player in question but his pedigree in match play golf made his selection perfectly understandable.

Nicolas Colsaerts

The respective captains are Jose Maria Olazabal and Davis Love. Both have been faced with conundrums as regards who to select as wildcards. However, Davis Love had the more demanding challenge as had to select four players who have not qualified by right.

Olazabal has chosen Colsaerts and Ian Poulter as his picks. Dustin Johnson and Brandt Snedeker were chosen by Davis Love due to their outstanding current form. Steve Stricker has formed a decent partnership with Tiger Woods in recent Ryder Cups and Presidents Cup and that helped in his selection. Jim Furyk has played in seven Ryder Cups and is a reliable partner in fourball and foursome matches.

The early matches which were contested between Great Britain and the United States were fairly even and competitive. However between 1935 and 1977 the States won 16 of the matches, there was one tie and Great Britain won just one match. The event was so one-sided that it generated very little interest generally and certainly was not popular as a betting medium.

The competition was totally transformed when it became a contest between the best players from Europe and America in 1979. The States still won the first three matches in this format but at least there was more interest generated by a Continental side. The United States won the 1983 match by just one point and from then on the outcome has been much less predictable.

Ante Post Betting Guide - Futsal World Championships

The next Futsal World Cup is being played in Thailand in November of this year. Futsal is a variant on soccer but it is played on a smaller pitch and mainly indoors. The name derives form the Portuguese game of futebol de salao which is translated to hall football or indoor football. The Spanish derivation is futbol sala and led to the game being universally known as futsal.

Futsal is popular in South America and there are strong leagues in Argentina and Brazil. Several leading internationals began their careers playing futsal and the most notable is Ronaldinho who has played 94 times for the full Brazilian national team.

Ronaldinho began his career playing Futsal

~Sports Betting Analyst

However, the strongest domestic league is in Spain where players have lucrative professional contracts and matches are shown live on national television. Spain lead the current international rankings, having won or been runners-up in the last four world championships.

Matches have begun to appear on dedicated sports channels and as a result bookmakers are now pricing up the major leagues and competitions. At the time of writing there are no outrights odds available for the world championships. However recent form suggests it would be unwise to look beyond Spain and Brazil as potential winners of the tournament.

Spread Betting: An Art Form

Introduction to Spread Betting

This is another form of sports betting that is derived from financial betting, such as on the dollar/pound exchange rate and the commodities indices. The basic principal is that you bet on an outcome of a match in many sports by going lower or higher than a predefined number. For example, you could bet on the number of corners in a soccer match. The spread firm would quote 11.0 to 11.5 and you can sell at 11.5 or buy at 11.0.

The point spread is used as a handicap for the favourite of any event. In a sporting event one team could be much stronger than the other, for example in a cup match or when a team well placed in the league plays a team in the relegation area. As long as equal amounts of bets are placed on each outcome the bookmaker is indifferent to the result as his profit on the event are guaranteed.

For analysis of some current spread betting opportunities please read on below:

Spread Betting – Current Markets

Heineken Cup

This is the premier rugby union competition in Europe. Teams qualify through their league position from the previous season and the best sides from the four home nations,Ireland,FranceandItalytake part. We have now reached the final stage of the competition and the deciding match is an all-Ireland affair betweenUlsterandLeinster.

IfLeinsterwin the trophy this season they will become the first side to win the Heineken Cup three times in four years. They have now gone 14 matches unbeaten in the competition and they look good enough to extend that record in the final.

Leinsterare the clear favourites with the traditional bookmakers and on the exchanges and buying them on the outright index with the spread firms is the recommendation. Their form in reaching this stage of the competition has been superior to that ofUlster. If they can beat Clermont away from home as they did in the semi-final Leinster should be too strong forUlsterat a neutral venue. The final is being played at Twickenham later this month.

2,000 Guineas

This race is one of the five Classics that take place over the course of the flat racing season inGreat Britain. These five races are confined to three year olds and take place over distances from one mile to one mile six furlongs. Camelot is the favourite for the 2,000Guineasand theDerbywhich takes on the first Saturday in June.

Camelot has the best form as a two year old and should confirm that superiority by winning the 2,000Guineas. He is trained by Aiden O’Brien who was the most successful trainer inIrelandlast season on the basis of prize money won.

The second favourite and most likely winner if Camelot doesn’t confirm the form is Top Offer. Neither horse has run this season so it’s the form as two year olds on which we assess their relative ability. Camelot proved to be the better horse in 2011 and the horse should win the first Classic of the season.

Champions League

Bayern Munich have the advantage of playing the final of the Champions League at their own stadium.Chelseawill be without four key players due to suspension. That includes their inspirational captain, John Terry, who was sent off in the second leg of the semi-final againstBarcelonafor a ridiculous offence.

Municheliminated Real Madrid in the semi-final and look like being at full strength for the final. Therefore, it may seem strange to suggest backingChelseawith the spread firms on their tournament indices.

The reasoning is that on the quotes availableChelseaare the best option. It was an tremendous achievement to eliminateBarcelonaand that spirit and level of commitment can see them defy the odds inMunich.

The players have reacted positively to the interim coach, Roberto de Matteo. He has the support of the senior players who didn’t seem to respond to the previous coach who was sacked earlier in the season.

Didier Drogba put in huge efforts in the matches againstBarcelona. He doesn’t endear himself to the neutrals with his tendency to go to ground repeatedly after apparently innocuous challenges. However, his commitment and contribution againstBarcelonacould be questioned.

There is another player who can now play a key role in the final and that is Fernando Torres. He has had a torrid time atChelseasince his transfer fromLiverpool

.However his goal againstBarcelonaand subsequent three goals against Queens Park Rangers in the league will have given his confidence a tremendous boost.

The final looks like being a close affair andChelseamay have to play extra time and go to penalties to win the trophy. However, the momentum is with theLondonclub and they can overcome the suspensions to win the Champions League for the first time.

Premier League corners

There were 16 corners in the match betweenManchesterCityand Manchester United this week. The spread forms quote was 11 to 11.5 so if you had bought the corners in that match, that is anticipated an above average number of corners, you would have made a healthy profit.

This market is based on statistics but Sporting Index seem to have got their numbers wrong in a number of occasions recently. It may be that games at the end of the season with little to play for and more open. Attacking play leads to corners and there could be some decent opportunities over the next couple of weeks.

There are six teams who have won and conceded more corners over the course of the season than the spread quotes would suggest. Bolton, Aston Villa, Queens Park Rangers, West Brom Chelsea and Manchester City all average over 12.5 corners in their matches, awarded and conceded, and the quotes are rarely above 11.5 so this represents a slight edge that can be exploited.

Recommendations

All quotes are from Sporting index.

Heineken Cup

2 points buyLeinsterat 55.5 (60 points to winner, downside 15.5 points)

2,000 Guineas

Fixed Odds Betting:

Introduction to Traditional Betting (Fixed Odds Betting)

Despite the growth of online and mobile betting the majority of people who had a bet on the Grand National last weekend did so through the traditional method of going to a betting office in England and placing a cash bet. There are now several ways of betting and a new type of customer who prefer binary, spread or exchange betting. The old style methods are still the most popular and it has been reported that only 5% of global betting is done online.

In the UK and elsewhere many traditional bookmakers are still operating. Despite the emergence of the internet there are still in the region of 10,000 betting offices in the UK. Debit and credit betting with traditional bookmakers still accounts for a fair share of the market.

This week we have some interesting markets to asses. The biggest snooker tournament of the year begins at the weekend and we have identified the player in form for this 17 day event. The Champions League is reaching an interesting stage and in this case it could be unwise to ignore the obvious. Finally the Texas Open on the US golf Tour provides a decent betting proposition.

For a more detailed analysis of these events please including tips at 10/1 and 11/1 please access the content below:

Types of Betting: Traditional Fixed Odds - Current Markets

World Snooker Championship

This is the snooker tournament that every player wants to win. Matches are played over 19 frames in the first round to a best of 35 frames final. Due to the length of the matches the best player generally emerges as the champion. The tournament lasts for over two weeks so a player must maintain his form and confidence over a sustained period.

In the past it has paid to use the world snooker rankings as a guide. The player who leads the rankings has been the most consistent and successful over the course of the season in the ranking tournaments. The top 16 players in the rankings qualify for the world finals automatically while the rest of the players must go through a qualifying process.

Judd Trump lost in the world final last year to John Higgins. He was identified as a potential future world champion then and he has continued to progress over the last 12 months. However Mark Selby is the current best player in the world based on the rankings. Over the last two years he has won one ranking tournament and qualified for four other semi-finals.

He was the world losing finalist in 2007 and has made the quarter finals at least in each of the last three years. When reaching the number one spot he became the first player to top the world rankings without previously winning the World Championship. He can put that right inSheffieldbetween now and the final early in May.

Champions League

Barcelonaare the best club side inEuropeand possibly the best side in the world. They have developed a style of play that involves pressing the opposition when they have the ball. If they do lose possession they strive to win it back before the other side have threatened their goal. The key personnel have refined their games to excel in this type of play.

And then they have Lionel Messi….The player fromArgentinais undoubtedly currently the best player in the world and some even say he is the best player ever. Pele, Maradona and Johan Cruyff have claims to that accolade but the records Messi is breaking supports the claim that he is the best ever.

He is now the leadingBarcelonagoalscorer in the history of the club and he’s still only 24. Messi has scored 63 goals this season, including 14 in the Champions league. He has scored 13 goals in his last 14 appearances for the European Champions.

Barcelonaare a shade of odds on to win the Champions League again. They beat Manchester United in last year’s final at Wembley and the current best team inEnglandwere outplayed and outclassed. The holders playChelseaover two legs in the semi-final and they are 2/11 to eliminate theLondonclub.

The potential finalists from the other semi-final tie are Bayern Munich or Real Madrid. The German side won the first leg of this tie 2-1 on their own ground but Madrid are expected to turn this round and set up the possibility of an all-Spanish final. At that stageBarcelonaand Messi are expected to successfully defend the premier club tournament inEurope.

Texas Open

Matt Kuchar is the only player from the top 20 in the world rankings contesting the Texas Open on the US Tour. He had a great chance to win theUSMasters two weeks ago but a couple of missed putts on the back nine were costly. He played again last week but never figured so any mental letdown fromAugustaworked through his system ahead of this week’s tournament.

The course inSan Antoniowas the most difficult Par 72 last season in terms of the average score over the four days. This week’s host course has staged the event for the last two years and it has been no better than sixth hardest for driving accuracy and hitting greens in regulation. Clearly accuracy over distance is vital for good scoring on this course. The solid ball strikers should be in the ascendancy this week.

Kuchar scores highly for both accuracy disciplines. He is a solid iron player who generally plays his approach shots to the correct part of the green. There will be less emphasis on putting this week and no lightening fast putting surfaces to handle, unlikeAugusta. Kuchar’s lack of course experience can be offset by his key attributes and he looks a worthy favourite inTexasover the next four days.

Recommendations:

World Snooker Championships

2 points back Mark Selby at 10/1.

Champions League

5 points backBarcelona5/6.

Texas Open

2 points back Matt Kuchar at 12/1.

US Masters

One of the most interesting spread bets of the sporting week is Tiger Woods finishing position in theUSMasters. There has been a great deal of media interest in how Woods will perform this week. After winning the Arnold Palmer Invitational by five shots the former world number one is now back in the top 10 in the world rankings.

If ever there was a course suited to Woods’ game it is Augusta National, the course that stages theUSMasters every year. Woods has won this tournament on four occasions. He won his first major in 1997 in this event but significantly has only won the tournament once in the last 10 years.

Woods has won 14 majors in total and his stated ambition to beat the tally of 18 won by Jack Nicklaus. However he has been stuck at 14 since 2008 and there are those who doubt his ability and temperament will overcome his general physical health and distractions away from the course.

Over the last six years Woods has been remarkably consistent atAugusta. Over that spell he has finished sixth or better every year. He has been second twice since his last Green Jacket win in 2005 and would have rewarded top 10 place backers each year. He has never missed the cut as a professional atAugusta

Woods obviously won again at just the right time and he is now the clear favourite in the outright betting. He has the best record of the entire field atAugusta, though Phil Michelson is a three-time champion. Woods currently leads the US Tour in the all-round category and birdies or better on par 5s.

He is too good a player not to figure at some stage during the tournament. However, at this stage of his career a win may be beyond him. There are several players who look in better shape to contend and Woods may have to accept another good top 10 finish but not a fifth title atAugusta. The recommendation is to sell his finishing position at 16 with Sporting Index, bearing in mind that the maximum make-up will be 70 so unit stakes should be kept modest.

FA Cup

The FA Cup final will be contested by aLondonteam and aLiverpoolteam. Tottenham playChelseain one semi-final while the other last four match is an all Merseyside affair. There are strong grounds for supporting Everton on the 2012 FA Cup outright index.

Everton can be bought at 66 at the Sporting Index market. The minimum make-up for that teams is 50 points which is awarded to the teams that qualify for the semi-finals. If Everton eliminateLiverpoolthey would earn at least another 6 points and this would be a winning trade regardless of the result of the final. The maximum downside is 16 points, multiplied by your stake.

On current form over the last seven matchesLiverpoolare 19th in the Premier League of the twenty teams in the competition. It is fair to say they have done well in the Cup competitions but their league form has been appalling. Indiscipline seems to have crept into the camp with Andy Carroll showing disrespect to the manager when substituted at Newcastle and goalkeeper, Pepe Reina, sent of for a ridiculous head but.

On the other side ofStanleyPark Everton are now playing with more confidence than at any other stage of the season. They were very impressive in beatingSunderlandaway from home in the prevouis round. Their league form is now on an upward curve and it is now a distinct possibility that they could finish aboveLiverpoolin the league and bet their local rivals in this massive Cup match.

Grand National

The greatest horse racing in the world takes place at Aintree, just outsideLiverpool, the weekend after next on April 14th. The race is the longest run inBritainand it attracts millions of once a year punters who would not have a bet on any other race or sporting event.

The current champion trainer is Paul Nicholls but he may have to settle for second place behind Nick Henderson this year. However, if he were to win the National the huge amount pf prize money would make him a certainty to again win most money as a trainer.

It appears that Nicholls will have just one horse in a race he would dearly love to win for the prestige and obviously the prize many. Neptune Collonges is a former high class steeplechaser who ran in the Cheltenham Gold Cup in the past. The horse looked very impressive in its last race at Haydock. Another great factor in his favour is the possibility that Ruby Walsh, the second best jockey in Great Britain., could ride him in the big race.

Neptune Collonges is a sound jumper and has that bit of class that can see him running a good race at Aintree. At the time of writing Sporting Index do not have a spread on the National so we will update the column when we have a quote but the initial strategy would be to buy Neptune Collonges in a Grand National performance index.

Recommendation Spread Bets for the week ahead

Sell Tiger Woods’ Finishing Position in theUSMasters at 16.

Buy Everton’s FA Cup Performance at 66.

Buy Neptune Collonges Grand National Performance (price not yet available but to follow).

Current Markets
