She is now something of a veteran and this run looks like ending in the quarter-finals, though that was the opinion expressed here before her last match. Radwanska is one of the form players of the year. She won the tournament in Dubai, outdoors on hardcourts. The Polish player is a at a career high of number four in the world and her career is on an upward curve and that momentum can be maintained with a win against Williams..

However, it is consistency over a sustained period of time that is reflected in the rankings and Wozniacki has a great record in regular tournaments in recent years. On seedings and tournament record Wozniacki is a worthy favourite and her superior head-to-head record confirms that she should win this match.

Some of the second round matches of this tournament are being played on Friday and we have two recommendations from Friday’s schedule. The seeded players are now about to get involved in a tournament that is played over two weeks. This championship is known as the fifth Major as the field is the strongest of the year outside the Grand Slam tournaments. Victoria Azarenka is the clear favourite and she is on a tremendous run of form. When she won the Australian Open earlier this year she went to number one in the rankings. Agnieska Radwanska is also playing well and has already won a tournament this year. Azarenka looks a rock solid favourite but Radwanska looks a decent bet at the odds available.

This looks a close match and on all known form and the non-seeded player could progress. Niculescu is seeded 28 and is slight favourite with the bookmakers. There are no head-to-head statistics for these player as this is their first meeting. Woznaik has the better tournament form over the last three years and that could be enough to negate the advantage Niculescu has in the current world rankings. Wozniak is on an upward career path and she can continue to move up the rankings by winning this match. A deciding set may be required and the decisive first break could be achieved by the selection.

Schiavone is vastly experienced and has been playing the Grand Slams and Premier events for more than 10 years. She is ranked at number 12 on the latest standings while her opponent is just 39th in the world. Pervak is progressing with a solid record on all surfaces but the outdoor hard courts could favour her opponent. Schiavone reached the last eight of this tournament last year and that form statistic should give her an edge in this match. Her experience and tenacity could well be too much for her opponent today but Pervak is a player to monitor over the next few years.

The first matches in the Main Draw have now been scheduled and we have three bets on Wednesday in individual matches. The outright prices are now available and I can see Agnieska Radwanska progressing through the draw at a big price. She is currently ranked at number four in the latest world rankings but fifth in the betting and the 18/1 looks worth taking. She has played six outdoor hardcourt tournaments this year and reached at least the third round on each occasion. She won the tournament inDubaiin February beating three players from the top 20 in the world in progressing to the final. She has a win/loss record of 19 to 6 this season and looks like one of the form players ahead of her participation in this tournament inMiami. She lost to eventual winner Victoria Azarenka in straight sets in the Indian Well quarter-finals last week and looks like making that round at least again inMiami.

Gisela Dulko v Sofia Arivdsson

 

Arivdsson fromSwedenis progressing well up the rankings and is now at a career high of 56 while her opponent in this match is outside the top 100. Over the last three years Dulko has won one more match than her opponent inMiamibut the Swede’s lack of tournament form should not be too great a disadvantage. On current form she looks a decent bet to progress to the second round, at which point the seeded players begin their participation. Arivdsson won the indoor tournament inMemphisearlier this sason. She won two matches at Indian Wells last week where she was beaten in the third round by former world number one Caroline Wozniacki., though she did win the first set. Dulko has no comparable form in her record and this is a match she will find difficult to win.

Ayumi Morita v Garbine Muguruza Blanco

 

This is another match that has one player at a much higher ranking than her opponent. Morita is now ranked in the top 100 while her opponent isn’t even in the top 200 in the latest standings. Blanco has yet to win a match inMiamiand that means the player on the other side of the net has better tournament form. These two players have yet to meet on the Main Tour but Morita has the ability to win this match in straight sets. The selection also has the better form this season to date. Indeed Blanco is yet to win a match this year and that unenviable record could be prolonged by one more match this week. Morita has reached number 47 in the world in the past but she can regain that status by winning these lucrative Premier event matches that hold ranking points only bettered by the Grand Slams.

Aleksandra Wozniak v Eleni Daniilidou

 

There is very little to choose between these players as they are about even on most form guidelines. Wozniak at 65 is just two places above her opponent in the world rankings. However, her career path is on a definite upward curve as she was outside the top 100 two years ago. Wozniacki looks the improving player and she can confirm that status by winning this match but she might have to play a deciding set. She has won two more matches than her opponent in this tournament over the last three years. Both players have made an excellent start to the season but Wozniack’s results have been marginally better. The key form indicators suggest this is a match she can win and build on her outstanding start to the season.
