Statistics for Epsom Derby Winners
What makes a Derby winner? Can you tell which horse will win from the results of the preceding races? Here are the statistics for previous winners.
In 2007, Authorized became the third horse in four years to follow up success in the totesport Dante Stakes at York in May with victory in the Vodafone Derby the following month.
Remarkably, North Light led home Rule Of Law and Let The Lion Roar in both contests in 2004, while 2005 Dante Stakes winner Motivator was also successful in the Classic at Epsom Downs.
The extended 10-furlong Dante Stakes, named after the 1945 Derby winner and run at York in mid-May, has been the best guide to the Vodafone Derby in recent years.
In 1997, Benny The Dip completed the double, while Dushyantor was second in both races the previous year. Others to complete the Dante Stakes – Derby double include Erhaab (1994), Reference Point (1987), Shahrastani (1986) and Shirley Heights (1978).
The last horse to run at Sandown in the Classic trial before going on to triumph at Epsom
Downs was runner-up Benny The Dip in 1997, although Sakhee came very close to winning both races in 2000.
The Stan James 2000 Guineas is the first Classic of the season and is one of the traditional trials for the Derby. Since Nijinsky completed the double in 1970, only Nashwan (1989) has won both races.
However, no less than six placed horses at Newmarket have gone on to Epsom success -
Sir Percy (2006), Generous (1991), The Minstrel (1977), Grundy (1975), Roberto (1972) and Mill Reef (1971).
Eagle Mountain, fifth in last year’s 2000 Guineas, finished the five-length runner-up
to the impressive Authorized in the Vodafone Derby.
The statistics demonstrate that Chester’s Dee Stakes has also been a fair guide, having
generated both the 1999 Vodafone Derby hero Oath and the 2003 winner of the premier
Classic, Kris Kin. Chester’s other trial, the Vase, produced three Derby winners between 1980 (Henbit) and 1990 (Quest For Fame), with Shergar (1981) being the other one. More recently, Dragon Dancer was runner-up in both races in 2006.
Lingfield’s Derby Trial is probably run over the course which resembles Epsom Downs
the most. Newmarket-based trainer Luca Cumani sent out both the latest two Lingfi eld
Trial winners to subsequently win at Epsom Downs – Kahyasi (1988) and High-Rise (1998). Slip Anchor (1985) and Teenoso (1983) also collected both races.
In recent years, the Derrinstown Stud Derby Trial at Leopardstown in Ireland has also been highly influential. For three consecutive years, the 10-furlong event provided the Derby winner – Sinndar (2000), Galileo (2001) and High Chaparral (2002). Prior to Sinndar completing the double, Golden Fleece collected both races in 1982 to give Vincent O’Brien his sixth and final Derby success.
