Everyone is talking about the ‘Superfight’ between Georges St Pierre and Anderson Silva but what a lot of people are forgetting is that GSP has to get passed Jake Shields before any such fight can take place. Jake Shields is no mug, with a fight record of 26wins, 4 losses and 1 draw, he has the submission skills and ‘stand up’ Muay Thai to stop GSP in his tracks. St-Pierre has recently admitted that Shields is an intelligent fighter and it’s that which makes him dangerous.
If a large majority of the UFC fan base is not paying too much attention to Shields, it’s certainly not the case for St-Pierre. In the past, GSP admitted that one of his biggest MMA career mistakes was to overlook an opponent in anticipation of the following fight. It was Matt Serra that he overlooked in UFC69 and GSP paid the price, being TKO’d in the 1st round.
GSP’s preparation for this fight has taken him from his hometown gym in Montreal to England and Alberqurque, training with the likes of Rashad Evans and Jon ‘Bones’ Jones who devastatingly dethroned the Light Heavyweight Champion Mauricio ‘Shogun’ Rua in UFC128.
St-Pierre will have to bring an element of unpredictability to this fight if he is to overcome the determination and skills of this Vegetarian underdog. Yes, that’s right, Jake Shields is a vocal vegetarian and claims he’s never eaten meat. I don’t think too many people can argue that it’s negatively affected his physique and capabilities within the Octagon.
Admittedly, being a huge GSP fan, I want him to win, especially knowing that the outcome would mean the fight of the century with Anderson Silva. Do I think he will win? yes. Will it go the full five rounds? No, I think GSP will look to keep Shields guessing and completely mix it up with combination ground work and stand up. How will he win? I’m feeling GSP will be patient and eventually find Shields’ jaw for a TKO. A big call maybe, but GSP has what it takes.
