Denman won this years Cheltenham Gold Cup – much to our misfortune – but the race itself was a terrific training performance as Nicholls saddled the first three home:
1. Denman
2. Kauto Star
3. Neptune Collonges
We’ve managed to find a copy of the race that you can watch online here – to relive, or enjoy the race for the first time.
A wonderful performance from the winner who proved to be still improving as he extended his unbeaten run over fences (he’s only once been beaten, though that was over hurdles at the Festival a couple of years ago). Superb.

This is a dual which we have not seen the last of, and who would bet against Kauto Star overturning this result with a return to his very best (on a more conducive surface)?
The trouble with today’s great race is it left us wanting more, but then the true greats always do…
I must agree, great training performance by Nicholls.
I also agree that Kauto will reverse the form next time they meet.
Lets hope we don’t have to wait for the 2009 gold cup for the next meeting.
